Our first combined selection draws on six source lists containing 499 distinct works. Each source gives a book one vote. We order books by the number of lists on which they appear, then publish the first 100.
When books have the same number of votes, their published rankings break the tie: a No. 1 position contributes 100 tie-break points, No. 2 contributes 99, and No. 100 contributes 1. We add those points across ranked sources. The World Library is alphabetical and the Guardian nonfiction list is chronological, so both contribute a vote without tie-break points. Remaining ties are ordered by title, then author.
Inclusion and order are independent of our stock. A collected work, series or containing edition is not automatically treated as the same work as an individual title. Each entry below identifies the source selections behind its position.
The six source lists
This is a comparison of these six selections, rather than a universal verdict. Four sources focus on novels or literature; two focus on nonfiction. The Modern Library lists cover the twentieth century, and the Guardian nonfiction list is limited to books written in English. The result reflects these sources’ dates, language coverage and selection methods. Genre, Australian-only and 21st-century lists are not included in this edition.
Ranking edition: 30 October 2026. Covers, reading notes and linked editions reuse our source-list updates. A newly matched edition can appear after the next hourly refresh; changes to the source selections require a new ranking edition.
