Printed (with the title-page in dark brown and black) by the Saint Edmundsbury Press. Bound by Hunter and Foulis in full red buckram with a design in gold by Noyes; cream endleaves with a map in dark red. Dark red slip case decorated in gold. The plates reproduce photographs of Norse antiquities. In addition there are 12 monochrome maps by Noyes, who also designed the decoration used on the title-page, binding and slip case. This marked the beginning of a new series of histories of ancient civilisations
