William Faulkner, the sound and the fury. 264 × 176 × 28–36 mm. 2 vols (see below). Type: Miller Display. Printed by Memminger MedienCentrum. Bound by Real Lachenmaier. Grey cloth two-volume slip case with inset red leather label (titled as above) blocked in gold. Originally published in 1929, this is the first edition printed in coloured inks to differentiate the complex strands of the novel’s narrative. The two volumes are as follows:
[1] William Faulkner, the sound and the fury. Pp. [i–vi], [1–2] 3–313 [314]. Printed in 14 different colours of ink. Bound in quarter red Nigerian goatskin leather. Paper boards printed letterpress by The Logan Press with ornaments designed by Russell Maret. The boards have been split front and back so that the paper boards are wrapped around more edges than normal. Gilded top edge. Grey endleaves. Leaf preceding the title-page reads in part ‘limited to 1480 numbered copies for sale to members of The Folio Society and 20 lettered copies, hors commerce’. The edition sold out quickly. A printed bookmark, with a colour key and line numbers to assist cross-referencing between novel and commentary volume, is loosely inserted.
[2] The sound and the fury, glossary & commentary, by Stephen M. Ross and Noel Polk. Pp. [i–vi] vii–xvii [xviii], [1–2] 3–213 [214]. Bound in full grey cloth. Printed endleaves reproduce the original typescript of the novel’s first pages and a letter from 1929 in which Faulkner wishes ‘publishing was advanced enough to use colored ink’. It was Ross and Polk who undertook the painstaking task of identifying each different time-level to be coloured.
