Falstaff hopes to improve his finances by pursuing two married women in Windsor, but his plans meet opponents who are more observant than he expects. Jealous husbands and competing suitors add further complications to the town’s social life. Shakespeare’s comedy turns attempted manipulation into a series of misunderstandings and counter-plots. Beneath the disguises and practical jokes lie questions about trust, marriage and the confidence with which people assume they understand those around them.

Bound by hand at Real Lachenmaier in quarter dark green Nigerian goatskin leather with marbled paper boards by Jemma Lewis and top edge gilding; dark green endleaves. Leaf following the title-page reads in part ‘Only 1000 copies of this edition have been630 2013 printed, but they are numbered in harmony with earlier volumes in the series, and therefore may bear a higher number’. The text is based on the edition originally published by Oxford University Press in 1990.
