[i–viii] ix–xxviii, [1–2] 3–221 [222–224]: [10] leaves of ‘plates’ (facing pp. [iii], 13, 43, 47, 66, 93, 121, 136, 161 and 191). Type: Bulmer with Old English for display. Printed by the Saint Edmundsbury Press. Bound by Hunter and Foulis in full grey cloth with a design in black and silver by Brockway; dark red endleaves. Black slip case. Although Folio considered publishing Frankenstein several times this is, surprisingly, the first edition of the book. It is a nicely restrained piece of design, perfectly complemented by Brockway’s wood-engraved illustrations.
