Purgatorio - Dante Alighieri - Folio Society - 2007
$320.00
The second cantica of the Divine Comedy, written in the early fourteenth century, follows Dante from the shore of Mount Purgatory up its terraces toward the Earthly Paradise. Virgil still guides him among the late-repentant and the proud, envious, wrathful, slothful, avaricious, gluttonous, and lustful, who purge their sins by punishment and hymn. Statius joins them; Beatrice replaces Virgil at the summit. Encounters with poets, popes, and Florentine souls mix theology with contemporary politics. The verse is terza rima. The book is a pilgrimage through a moral landscape.
