Two maps by Kevin Freeborn are on pages [xxvi–xxvii]. The plates, 12 of which are in colour, primarily reproduce photographs of archaeological sites and artefacts. First published in 1981, Wood has revised the text, and provided two new chapters, plus an introduction, epilogue and bibliography.
