Novels by Ernest Hemingway. 228 × 150 × 15–35 mm. 5 vols (see below). Type: Perpetua. Printed and bound by the Bath Press. Quarter black cloth (uniform with item 565), cream paper boards printed in black and another colour (see below); plain endleaves (a different colour in each volume). Red five-volume slip case with the author’s signature and portrait in black and gold. The five volumes are as follows:
[1] Ernest Hemingway, the sun also rises, introduction by Joyce Carol Oates, illustrations by David Frankland. Pp. [i–ii], [1–6] 7–278 [279–282]: [10] leaves of ‘plates’. The binding paper is printed in pink and black, and the end- leaves are cream. Originally published in 1926.
[2] Ernest Hemingway, a farewell to arms, illustrations by David Frankland. Pp. [1–10] 11–312: [12] leaves of ‘plates’. The binding paper is printed in pale blue and black, and the endleaves are pale blue. Originally published in 1929.
[3] Ernest Hemingway, to have and have not, illustrations by David Frankland. Pp. [i–ii], [1–10] 11–218 [219–222]: [8] leaves of ‘plates’ (facing pp. [3], 27, 48, 67, 102, 152, 183 and 210). The binding paper is printed in pale yellow and black, and the endleaves are pale yellow. Originally published in 1937.
[4] Ernest Hemingway, for whom the bell tolls, illustrations by David Frankland. Pp. [1–8] 9–490 [491–492]: [14] leaves of ‘plates’. The binding paper is printed in pale grey and black, and the endleaves are pale grey. Originally published in 1940.
[5] Ernest Hemingway, the old man and the sea, illustrations by David Frankland. Pp. [1–10] 11–123 [124]: [6] leaves of ‘plates’ (facing pp. [3], 44, 61, 73, 91 and 100). The binding paper is printed in grey-green and black, and the endleaves are blue-green. Originally published in 1952. This volume is set in a larger size of type, with wide leading, to make the short text into a larger volume.
