Fifty fables of La Fontaine, translated by Norman R. Shapiro, introduced by Sarah Bakewell, illustrated by Quentin Blake. 288 × 220 × 24 mm. Pp. [i–vi] vii–xvi, [1–2] 3–97 [98–104]. Type: Garamond. Printed and bound by Zanardi. Full dark green Indian goatskin leather blocked in gold. The design, following the 2011 edition of Candide, is based on Blake’s distinctive handwriting; pale brown endleaves. Pale brown slip case blocked in gold with enlargement of Blake’s titling. The edition statement reads in part ‘limited to 1000 copies for sale to members of The Folio Society, and 25 lettered copies which are not for sale’. Blake has signed each one. From the 239 fables La Fontaine published, 50 stories have been selected and illustrated.
