The blue fairy book, edited by Andrew Lang, with an introduction by Joan Aiken, paintings & decorations by Charles van Sandwyk. 253 × 190 × 63 mm. Pp. [1–2], [i–iv] v–xvii [xviii–xx], 1–371 [372–374]: [17] leaves of colour plates. Type: Caslon with hand-drawn lettering (by van Sandwyk) for the title. Printed (the title-page
in pink and black) and bound by Cambridge University Press. Full dark blue buckram with a design by van Sandwyk in red, cream and gold; dark blue endleaves with a design in gold by van Sandwyk. Dark blue slip case. This gives the appearance of being another in Folio’s series of facsimile children’s books. However, this volume is different, since the text was originally published (in 1889) in a smaller format with different illustrations, and the present volume has been typeset and illustrated by a contemporary artist in the style of the early twentieth century. In addition to the plates and the title-page design, there are 28 line-drawn illustrations and decorations by van Sandwyk, three repeated.
