In 1803, after Assaye, Ensign Richard Sharpe is newly commissioned in Wellesley's army in India and finds officers unwilling to treat him as one of them. A stolen supply dump, Sergeant Obadiah Hakeswill, and the renegade East India Company officer William Dodd draw him toward the Mahratta stronghold of Gawilghur, a cliff fortress of outer and inner walls above the Deccan. The novel follows the battles of Argaum and the siege as Sharpe tries to hold his rank and settle old scores. It is a military adventure.
