Nikolaus Joseph von Jacquin, an Austrian botanist born in Leiden, led a royal expedition to the Caribbean from 1755 to 1759 commissioned by Emperor Francis I to collect rare plants for the Schönbrunn Palace. His resulting work, Selectarum Stirpium Americanarum Historia (1763), is recognized as the first major Linnaean botanical publication in the New World, classifying plants from Martinique, Cuba, Jamaica, Santo Domingo, and Cartagena. The book is renowned for its 264 exquisitely beautiful and scientifically accurate plant portraits created by the Bauer brothers and their team, alongside Jacquin’s detailed Latin descriptions. It serves as a critical historical record of Caribbean flora, noting that many specimens degraded or were destroyed in the Viennese climate, making the illustrations essential for identification.
