[i–iv] v–xlii, [1–2] 3–156 [157–158]: [7] leaves of colour plates (facing pp. [iii], 14, 31, 62, 79, 111 and 126). Type: Bell. Printed and bound by
Gomer Press in full gold cloth printed in black with portrait and text blocked in black; dark red endleaves. Dark red slip case blocked with the line ‘You have seen how a man was made a slave; you shall see how a slave was made a man.’ The plates reproduce six framed daguerreotypes and an ambrotype of Douglass taken between approximately 1841 and 1856.
