Decameron - Giovanni Boccaccio - Folio Society - 2007

Ten young people retreat from plague-stricken Florence and pass their days telling stories. Their tales range across love, deception, misfortune and generosity, bringing merchants, religious figures and resourceful individuals into situations shaped by desire and chance. Boccaccio uses this shared act of storytelling to explore a broad range of human behaviour. The Decameron moves between comedy and cruelty, considering the ways people negotiate social expectations and respond when their plans are overturned.
