With the present volume a new edition of the complete novels of Dickens was launched. This time, rather than typeset each book and commission new illustrations, Folio chose to reproduce in facsimile the Nonesuch Press edition, designed by Francis Meynell and published in 1937 and 1938 under the editorial direction of Walter Dexter, Thomas Hatton, Hugh Walpole and Arthur Waugh. In the original Nonesuch edition, the illustrations were reprinted from the same etched plates and wood-engraved blocks used for the first, or early, editions of the novelist’s works. The edition was set in a newly designed type, ‘based upon the vivid but wholly unaffected letter-design originally cut by William Martin for use by that eminent printer William Bulmer shortly before 1790’ (quote from the 1937 prospectus for the edition), which was later released by the Monotype Corporation as ‘Bulmer’. The original cursive shoulder-notes were removed from the present reprint, and the series was issued in a uniform binding (see above), with gilt top edges and a dark red silk marker in each volume. Each was also expanded with a new introduction, typeset to harmonise with the original Nonesuch typography.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0962/6140/6993/files/P1010853_7ec41d0d-d442-4faa-a7ef-a294d9fd2f92.png?v=1780631732
charlie-and-the-chocolate-factory-ae-roald-dahl-suntup-editions-2022-1st-edition
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory AE - Roald Dahl - Suntup Editions - 2022 1st Edition

Edition
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory AE - Roald Dahl - Suntup Editions - 2022 1st Edition

Condition
Like New

Details

One of the most beloved children’s stories of the 20th century, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl is a masterpiece of pure imagination.

Willy Wonka’s famous chocolate factory is opening at last! But only five lucky children will be allowed inside. And the winners are: Augustus Gloop, an enormously fat boy whose hobby is eating; Veruca Salt, a spoiled-rotten brat whose parents are wrapped around her little finger; Violet Beauregarde, a dim-witted gum-chewer with the fastest jaws around; Mike Teavee, a toy pistol-toting gangster-in-training who is obsessed with television; and Charlie Bucket, our hero, a boy who is honest and kind, brave and true, and good and ready for the wildest time of his life!

First published in 1964, the dark humor and cheerful gruesomeness of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory immediately endeared the book to children, making it an instant bestseller. Rarely has a tale of morality ever been more deliciously entertaining to read, as Roald Dahl’s story warns children and adults alike of the dangers of bad parenting, spoiling children, and self-indulgence.

Dahl drew inspiration for the story from his own childhood. In the 1920s, chocolate makers in England would frequently send samples to school children in exchange for their opinions on new products. Two of the largest competing chocolate companies, Cadbury and Rowntree, would send spies posing as employees to discover the other’s trade secrets. As a result, the companies became highly protective of their chocolate making process. It was a combination of this secrecy and the elaborate, often gigantic, machines in the factory that inspired the author to write his story.

Roald Dahl’s classic tale has been adapted into two major motion pictures, Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory (1971) and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005). The night after his fiancée’s suicide, wealthy widower Roger Ackroyd withdraws to his study to read a mysterious letter—one that holds secrets best left buried. By morning, he is dead, murdered in a locked room with a weapon from his own collection. Summoned out of retirement, detective Hercule Poirot finds himself in one of his most baffling cases, where every friend is a suspect and every truth hides another lie. Was Roger Ackroyd murdered for money? Love? Revenge? The truth will out… but you’ll never see it coming.

Originally published as a fifty-four-part serialization in the London Evening News from July 16 through September 16, 1925 under the title, Who Killed Roger Ackroyd?, the first edition was published by William Collins, Sons in June 1926. It was Agatha Christie’s first novel to be published by Collins and its monumental success changed her reputation forever, with critics like The New York Times Book Review comparing it to works by Edgar Allan Poe and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The Observer wrote, “The Murder of Roger Ackroyd makes breathless reading from first to the unexpected last,” while The Scotsman praised it as “one of the cleverest and most original of its kind.”

With its unexpected twists and a game-changing conclusion, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd is a masterpiece of suspense and ingenuity that continues to captivate readers worldwide.

ARTIST EDITION
6” x 9” trim size.
320 Pages.
Limited to 500 copies.
Printed letterpress on Fedrigoni Arena 120 gsm paper by Pat Randle & Ellen Bills on a Heidelberg cylinder at Nomad Letterpress in Gloucestershire, United Kingdom.
Seven color illustrations by award-winning Italian artist duo Anna & Elena Balbusso.
Signed 'The Balbusso Twins,' the joint signature of artists Anna and Elena Balbusso.
Dust jacket featuring wraparound artwork by Anna & Elena Balbusso.
Full cloth binding.
Foil blocked cover.
Designed by award-winning designer Mark Argetsinger.
Text is set in Monotype Bell.
Endsheets are embossed Rainbow paper.
Housed in a cloth covered slipcase.

Edition
Fifty Fables of La Fontaine - Folio Society - 2013 Limited Edition

Condition
Like New.

Details
Fifty fables of La Fontaine, translated by Norman R. Moore - Folio Society - 2023

First published in 1823 as A Visit from St. Nicholas, this short narrative poem describes a household on Christmas Eve. The speaker is settling the children when a clatter draws him to the lawn; he sees St. Nicholas arrive in a miniature sleigh drawn by eight named reindeer, then come down the chimney with a pack of toys. St. Nicholas fills the stockings, lays a finger aside of his nose, and departs wishing a happy Christmas to all. The poem fixes the names of the reindeer and the look of the gift-bringer. The work is a seasonal narrative poem.

Edition details

Publisher: Folio Society

Edition year: 2023

Volumes: 1

Condition

Like New
